Hotep NABSW Family,

It is with great pleasure that I greet you as the Interim President of the National Association of Black Social Workers. It is my belief that we can pull together in the spirit of Harambee to overcome  never faced before obstacles and thrive. If ever the Black Community needs change agents, it is NOW.

Allow me to extend our collective love and gratitude to the 13th National President Cheikh Ahmandou Banba Mback√© and his Queen Brenda Baker-Mback√© for their dedication, service and generosity  to the organization. NABSW is blessed with competent professionals who are committed to the NABSW Code of Ethics and Guiding Principles that our Founders and Pioneers created. These documents mandate that we use our knowledge and expertise to advocate, heal and liberate our communities.

As the daughter of the late Dr. Fred rick E. Smith, NABSW Pioneer and Longtime President of the St. Louis Chapter, I am proud to carry on the legacy of activism for the past 25+ years on the national and local levels. In addition to  being a wife and mother, I am Director of Supportive Services for Volunteers of America, SE Louisiana in New Orleans and an Adjunct Professor at Southern University New Orleans.  From 2018-2020, I served as National Vice President working closely with our National Committees to prepare strategic goals, produce Quarterly and Annual Reports and preside over the National Steering Committee Meetings. Rest assured that I plan to continue working with the Executive Committee, Chapter Presidents, Past National Presidents and you--the members--to cultivate unity and positive change.

Over the next few weeks, the National Executive Committee and I will be addressing funding priorities, the COVID-19 pandemic in the Black Community and technology issues. On May 16th, NABSW  will host its first virtual Steering Committee Meeting. Professional Development is exploring online training opportunities while the Office of Student Affairs and our National Archives are developing some exciting new endeavors.

Lastly, I would like to invite persons interested in the Office of National Vice President to submit the following: (1) a resume, (2) a statement explaining their interests and ability to attend SCMs and Annual Conferences; (3) areas of expertise and (4) years of experience with NABSW and/or local ABSW Chapters. Please limit submissions to a total of four (4) typed pages, Send the nominations packet to officemanager@nabsw.org by 4:00 pm EST on Friday, April 24, 2020. Note that this is an appointed position effective May 1st and subject to the consent and approval of the Executive Committee. #NABSWcares  # NABSWstrong.

Sincerely,

Melissa Smith Haley, M.S.W., L.M.S.W.

Interim President
