Communication and Information
David Robison and Alice G. Thompson
The Communication and Information Committee is responsible for media and public relations activities; developing and distributing strategic information to local chapters; providing community education on NABSW related issues; and, providing technical assistance to local chapters and standing committees for public relations purposes.
Actions to be considered by the committee will include:
§ Implementing a Community Information Network (CIN) media initiative within local chapters beginning in Fall 2007. The purpose of the CIN initiative is to educate local chapters on strategies for influencing positive image reporting by the media on people of African descent. The active participation of local chapters in getting weekly slots in newspapers, radio, television, and community cable networks has proven to be successful, and
§ Developing a proposal designed to further market the national conference proceedings by utilizing an African-centered syndicated radio show personality to broadcast live from the conference exhibit area beginning in 2008.
Committee goals are to:
§ Increase awareness and advocacy on behalf of the issues and national positions of NABSW through communication, information, media and public relations activities.
§ Provide training, education, and dissemination of information to local chapters on working effectively with local media outlets.
The committee has submitted two (2) innovative proposals to the Executive Committee for consideration. Both proposals are in the process of refinement and will be resubmitted to the Executive Committee for further consideration.
This committee is undergoing transformation through the inclusion of expanded media and public relations activities. In its forward planning for 2007, the Committee Co-Chairs will be actively seeking members throughout the country who have experience and/or an interest in media, public relations, and communication activities to join the committee.
The committee will also submit a workshop proposal to provide workshop training on communication, information, media, and public relations strategies at each annual conference beginning with the 2008 conference.
